You always want your BMW M5 to be well maintained, especially when it comes to brakes. Bad brakes are not only bad for your rods, tires and pedestrian ears, but can also be unsafe and potentially cause an accident.
Common Symptoms of Bad Brakes
It is possible for bad brakes to go unnoticed. Most brakes usually come with an indicator, but these indicators can sometimes wear off and not notify you of your brake problem. Here are some common symptoms that will tell you you need to check your BMW M5’s brakes.
- A high-pitched squeal noise when you brake
- A slow brake reaction when you hit the brake
- Have to push the brake pedal all the way down for your vehicle to reach a complete stop
Inspecting The Brakes
Do you want to see for yourself if your M5’s brakes are going bad? That is definitely not a bad idea if you have the right tools.
- First you will need to raise up your BMW M5 with a jack, high enough for you to be able to inspect under each tire without any hassle.
- Once the vehicle is raised, go underneath and begin to inspect all four rotors. Use a flashlight to get a better look.
- When inspecting your rotors, look for extreme rust or any noticeable wear and tear. If you notice one of these problems you will need to replace the rotor or regrind it. Go see a professional and they will recommend the best step to take.
- Inspect the brake caliper and again look for any heavy rust or really bad wear.
- Inspect the brake pads inside the caliper. Check if the lining has been wasted. A good way to notice the difference is by determining thinness. Really thin means it has been worn thoroughly, and your brake pads will need to be replaced.
If you are a do it yourself kind of person, then you will need to visit your local auto part store and buy brakes designed for the M5. If you’d rather let a professional do the job, then schedule an appointment with your local BMW service shop.
Being on top of brake maintenance isn’t only an awesome way to keep your vehicle in great condition, but pro-active way of keeping your streets safe from harm.
