Why Your BMW Needs Coolant System Maintenance

BMW Coolant System Maintenance

The coolant system is an integral part of your BMW, especially in Southern California. Without any maintenance, you will most likely deal with overheating and potentially expensive damage to your BMW’s engine. Maintenance on your coolant system is recommended every seven years. Here’s what you need to know about maintenance on your BMW’s coolant system.

Before inspection on a coolant system, it’s always important to let the BMW cool down because it will be dangerously hot to touch or open.

Coolant Fluid

The coolant component will have coolant that needs to be filled up to a certain level, usually marked by a line. If not full, then it needs to be filled to avoid overheating issues. Also make sure to inspect the coolant fluid and component itself for any rust, corrosion and especially oil, which can be a big no no, because it can mean your head gasket is blown.

Fan

Diagnose the fan by running it with your hand to hear for any dysfunctional noises. The fan needs to run silently and swiftly without any signs of interruption. The blades and harness need to be free of corrosion and damage.

Hoses

There are hoses leading up the coolant component. Inspect these hoses for corrosion or damage as well. All the connections need to be as tight as a nail in a wall. If hose connections are loose than it is crucial you get them fixed asap. Usually the maintenance timeline on hoses are from 35,000 to 50,000 miles.

Radiator

The radiator cap needs to be free of corrosion. Use a pressure tester to check the PSI level which needs to be within 2.

Water Pump

Like the coolant component, inspect the pump thoroughly including hoses and connections. Make sure they are fit and secured tightly. When the engine is running make sure it isn’t producing any noises or vibrations.

Leaks

If you suspect leaks, then the best way to find out the source of the problem is by pressure testing or dye testing.
