How To Inspect Your BMW Suspension

Inspect BMW Suspension

The suspension is vital to the operation of your BMW vehicle. It is the system that connects everything to the wheels, so everything runs cohesively. For example, with the help of the springs, shocks, and struts it supports the weight of your BMW and helps reduce excess energy that is wasted on the road. Without a suspension there is virtually no steering stability, no comfort for your BMW and passengers when on the road and most importantly, no safety.

Not staying on top of the maintenance of your suspension can lead to more expensive repairs in the future, but can also lead to accidents due to poor handling that can occur from a bad suspension. With the following tips you should be able to tell if your BMW suspension is running efficiently:

  • Your BMW riding rough means that its shocks and struts are wearing out and need to be replaced.
  • If when steering you are experiencing unusual drifting and pulling, this means your shocks are out and you should take your BMW to a specialist as soon as possible. Bad shocks can cause rollovers.
  • Uneven tires treads means that your suspension isn’t holding your BMW evenly, this cuts the expected life of your tires.
  • If you have greasy or oily shocks, that means there is a leak and you need to get the shocks replaced.
Perform a hard brake test by braking abruptly. When braking if your vehicle dives or drops, there can be a problem with your shocks or struts.
  • Perform a bounce test by pressing down on the front and then back of your BMW and checking for more than 3 bounces. More than 3 bounces means your suspension is going bad.
