2008 BMW X3 Transmission Service

The 2008 BMW X3 is available in 6 speed automatic and manual transmissions. The difference between the two is that automatic transmissions risk creating more heat than manual transmissions.

These transmissions have very intelligent technology designed to be more driver-friendly than ever. New mechanical technology in these transmissions allow information to move faster, allowing more space and weight and keeping a very minimal noise coming from the engine. It makes drives smoother than ever.

The electronic gear shifter makes shifting incredibly adaptive by changing the timing of shifts to situations, making less traction occur. Another benefit of this electronic system is its ability to detect the weather and adapt the vehicle’s drivability to it.

Along with all the sportiness and speed the X3 brings, it also is a big gas saver. Technology in the X3 transmission is designed to make transmission and engine functions less strenuous and more effective when it comes to consumption.

Things To Check

When it comes to checking the X3 transmission it is all about making sure the transmission is running efficiently. Don’t risk overheating by inspecting these components of your x3:

Radiator

The radiator on the X3 transmission needs to be checked for calcium build up, which causes clogs and not enough heat being produced for the transmission. Radiators should be replaced after 100,000 miles.

Thermostat

It is important you replace your X3 transmission’s thermostat once you hit 70,000 miles. Low temperature thermostats are recommended for areas the reach 90 degree weather like California.

Auxiliary Fan

What this fan does is cool the radiator when the air conditioning system is running. It is important the auxiliary fan is inspected to see if it is working correctly.

How To Service X3 an Transmission

Transmission fluid needs to be replaced every 20,000 miles along with the filter. When inspecting your transmission fluid, if you find brown or dark color, with a bad odor, then it is important you replace your transmission fluid as soon as possible.

To better service your transmission, drain all the fluid in a clean oil pan, and inspect it. If you find any metal objects on the fluid, then it is highly possible the transmission is worn or damaged.

You will also need to examine the bottom of the trans oil pan. Check for any glitter. If found, then your vehicle could be suffering from transmission bearing failure.

Once finished draining all the fluid and inspecting the pan, replace the filter and add new transmission fluid. We recommend you check with a professional for your X3 model’s fluid type.
